The Mexican Film industry is now more dynamic than ever, the past five years has seen the market for Spanish language films boom. The number of new screens in Mexico is increasing by around 180 per year and the largest exhibitors chain claims that within the next five years Mexican films will be 30% of the market against the films made in Hollywood.

The second biggest exhibitor chain reported they sold 32 million tickets in 2002 solely in Mexico City. Of a total of 154 Million sold at national level, that means Mexico is the 6th film market in the world*. The reason that this is happening is very simple: the Mexican film market was in crisis for decades and now local new legislation and fresh investment in the exhibition sector is making this incredible boom. As a result, for the first time in fifty years Mexican films are shoulder to shoulder with American ones at the local box office.

And of course, Mexican films are sold in major territories as never before. Amores Perros (BAFTA Award, Oscar nominated), Streeters, Y Tu Mamá También (2 BAFTA Award nominations), The Crime of Father Amaro (Oscar nominated) and Todo el poder (to name a few) are also hits in other countries. Rabbit On The Moon will join them.
